Bend project to create banquet for western monarch butterflies

Deschutes Land Trust has put out a call to the community seeking volunteers for its milkweed planting project, and it is hoping for a big turnout.

Milkweed is the favorite food of the monarch butterfly, which is known for its long migration. The plan for the day is to install milkweed plants at the Bend campus of the Central Oregon Community College. The species used will be native to the local area.

Since a pollinator garden can attract a variety of species, several types of native plants will be installed along with the milkweeds. The work will be carried out in groups, and water and snacks will be provided.

The organizers for the activity will make sure there are trowels and sturdy gloves for the adults who participate. Since an event like this can be a way to introduce kids to nature and horticulture, the planners noted that they will make sure kid-sized gloves and trowels are on offer for any children who register. Supplying the young helpers on this sort of project with coloring books and activity sheets that give more details can help them to learn even more, and stationery printers can supply them.

The Central Oregon Community College’s milkweed planting party is scheduled for September 13. Registration is now open for the occasion.
