Bend class to help community get growing
Bend residents who get “green” with envy when they see their neighbors’ garden may soon be able to show off their own horticultural talents, thanks to an upcoming learning opportunity.
The OSU Master Gardener program gives subject matter experts the chance to share their knowledge, and it will be hosting a class that will introduce the ins and outs of growing vegetables successfully in central Oregon. Taking place next month, it will be offered at no cost, and it will be specifically tailored to the area.
Attendees in the session will learn how to choose plants and cultivars that do well in local growing conditions, and there will be a discussion of ways to extend the growing season. Building healthy soil and other cultural concerns are on the agenda, and both soil thermometers and row covers will be available for purchase on site. Advance registration is requested.
Taking part in this sort of workshop can help those who are interested in home growing to hit the ground running. A brochure printing company will be happy to prepare learning materials for a session.
This introduction to the art of growing vegetables in Bend will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 23. The venue for the morning will be Westside Church and Community Center, located at 2051 NW Shevlin Park Road.
