Westerville expands Fourth of July events

Westerville's Rotary Club is expanding the various events celebrating Independence Day. According to an article in This Week, when he planned last year's activities, Dave Krebs, the chairman of the event, realized there was a lot of empty space during the day. The fun began with a 5K run/walk, followed by an afternoon parade. The fireworks came last, much later in the day. The event planners decided to do something to fill the gap between the parade and the fireworks, and developed the idea of a concert series.

Last year, they McGuffey Lane, a band from Columbus, as well as the Westerville Symphony to the schedule. They also added some additional entertainment and food, and had approximately 2,500 people come to enjoy the events. That led them to ask what more they could do for the 2016 celebration. They decided to add even more food and more music.

Musically, Rotary has invited Hurricane Jerry and The Stormfront to perform. Guitarist John Reichle will be there as well, and a DJ will perform from 3.30 in the afternoon until 10 p.m. In addition, ten new food vendors will be available, including Asian Persuasion, and Yumii Kettle Corn.

Krebs believes the city has embraced the changes and sees no reason why the event can't continue growing.
