A long history
European settlement in Middleburg Heights dates back almost 200 years, but Native Americans were here even earlier. Approximately 100 years before Europeans started arriving, tribal coalitions headed by the Hurons and Iroquois battled the British and French over the fur trade. The Iroquois and their allies defeated the Hurons, who were allied with the Wyandots; the latter eventually settled in Ohio in about 1745. During the years following the American Revolution, settlers continued moving west and onto Wyandot lands, under the terms of treaties between the tribes and the U.S. government. Thus, the earliest European settlers in Middleburg Heights arrived in about 1809.

Growth and development
Early in the area's history, the center of the township's social life and commerce was Berea, which gained its independence in 1836. At that time, Middleburg heights was a farming community known as East Middleburg Township. Farmers there were extremely successful, and supplied produce, especially onions, to the whole eastern half of the country. The onions were grown in a marshy area known as Podunk Swamp, and the town still pays homage to its status as the ‘Onion Capital’ of the country. However, after World War II, the population increased and new housing was needed, and farms were turned into housing developments. Middleburg Township became Middleburg Heights in 1961, and the last farm ceased operations in 1971.

Middleburg Heights began changing in character late in the 1940s, when the end of the Second World War signaled a growth in population and a demand for housing that transformed the community. These developments helped shape Middleburg Heights into a residential community, no longer dependent on farming.
