Show choir added to list of physical education exemption activities

Thanks to an exemption approved by the Ohio General Assembly, high school students from Ohio who perform in the school’s show choir will not be required to go to gym class in order to graduate.

Mentor High School applauded the exemption. The show choir at this school is called Top 25 and has been an integral part of the school’s heritage for more than 50 years. In that time, they are likely to have received several Corporate Gifts and Promotional Products from local businesses as sponsorships.

People who support the Top 25 stand by the belief that the singers are required to show the same level of dedication that sports teams show. According to Principal Jason Crowe:

“It’s long practices. It’s throughout the entire school year. They work over the summer. There’s summer camps. Between dancing, singing, it’s a huge commitment and we’re very proud of our students.”

The exemption only applies to choir members who have been a part of the choir for two full seasons. This means that show choir is now added to the physical education exemption list, which includes athletics teams, cheerleading, junior reserve training, and a marching band.

School districts will still have the responsibility of setting exactly how the exemption works. Supporters of the exemption feel that the other school districts in the state with show choir programs will be eager to implement the policy in their schools.
