Early days, growth, and manufacturing
Mansfield is named for Jared Mansfield, the Surveyor General who directed the planning of the settlement. It was platted in 1808, having been founded by Jacob Newman, Joseph Larwell, and James Hedges. Incorporation came in 1828, and Mansfield gained its city charter in 1857.
As happened in many settlements, growth began when the railroads arrived, which was between 1846 and 1863. During that time, the Sandusky, Mansfield, and Newark Railroad reached Mansfield, followed by the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne, and Chicago Railway in 1849, and finally the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad in 1863. With such easy access to Mansfield via these systems, the community became a center for heavy industry, with dozens of manufacturing concerns prospering here.
Mansfield today
Nowadays, much of the manufacturing sector has disappeared, but many companies remain in operation, including AK Steel, Crane Plumbing, and The Carousel Works. In addition, the city is seeking to diversify its economy to lessen its dependence on manufacturing.
