The city of Mansfield held discussions at the Council meeting recently on whether or not to allow residents with fewer than three acres to keep chickens on their property. Both sides made their points and it will likely become a topic of discussion for weeks to come.
Currently, homeowners and realtors are divided on whether the passing of this legislation would diminish the value of homes. Some claimed that research, which included speaking with realtors in five cities that allow chickens, shows it would actually draw buyers to the community as many families are trying to maintain organic lifestyles and diets. It is possible that many of the realtors would use the outcome of this legislation on their Flyers and Brochures.
Municipalities had concerns that allowing the chickens to reside on properties that formerly were not considered would increase the demand in the codes and permits department, which already has a skeleton crew that consists of a half dozen full time employees who are also in charge of housing inspections and clerical work. Adding this extra task would stretch the department’s resources without the budget to hire additional personnel.
The zoning committed has voted to move the proposal in front of city council for several readings, with the final reading being scheduled for March 21. It is possible the chicken legislation would become a ballot initiative and the citizens of Mansfield would be the decision makers.
