Trade expo scheduled near Lyndhurst

An event that will explain fair trade is set to take place near Lyndhurst.

The 2022 Ohio Fair Trade Teach-In & Expo will be hosted by John Carroll University in University Heights, a short distance from Lyndhurst. The sponsor of the event is the Ohio Fair Trade Network.

The concept of fair trade is sometimes credited to Edna Ruth Byler and her visit to Puerto Rico in 1946. There she saw women making gorgeous lace, but living in poverty despite their undoubted hard work. She brought their lace with her to the United States, sold it, and returned the money directly to the women. The fair trade movement grew from there, and today it seeks to make international trade fairer by making sure craftspeople and farmers in developing nations find customers who will buy their products at fair prices.

At the upcoming expo, attendees will learn about fair trade as well as sustaining the environment, and will then be able to visit vendors who will be selling such products as handcrafted jewelry, tea, coffee, and chocolate, all which will generate income for the farmers and artisans who made the products.

The expo’s theme in 2022 is “Fair Trade and Environmental Sustainability/Care for Our Earth,” which is one of fair trade’s basic principles. There is no admission charge for the expo, which will take place Saturday, October 8, from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm. Organizers of events like these can use brochure printing to create pamphlets explaining the concepts to be discussed.
