People who have wondered “why are they sweeping the ice?” have a chance to have their question answered at a Try Curling event in the new year.
Curling consists of teams sliding heavy granite stones down a sheet of ice to a specific target. The people frantically sweeping in front of the stones are brushing away any material that might slow the stone or throw it off course.
Those intrigued by this sport have a chance to try it out at the Mayfield Curling Club in Warrensville Heights, a short distance from Lyndhurst. During the session, participants will be taught the basics of strategy, sweeping, and delivery, and can then practice their new skills in a mini game.
People who plan to attend the event are asked to carry in, not wear, a pair of athletic or tennis shoes with clean soles, and which specifically do not have ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) soles. They should dress in layers in clothes that are comfortable, warm, and allow for easy movement. The temperature in the center is around 40°F. Stabilizers, brooms, and step-on sliders will be available.
The Try Curling session is set for January 9, from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm. The club is at 23103 Miles Road, Suite D. The cost for this experience is $60 and the event is for those age 14 and over who are new to the sport. Organizers of events like this can use flyer printing to create instruction sheets for the participants.
