A concert in Lyndhurst will feature works that may be unfamiliar to many people.

The upcoming “Strive for the Highest" 2023 Fall Concert will take place at the Dolan Center Atrium at John Carroll University, with flutist Julianna Sabo as the featured soloist.

The program is “Variations on a Korean Folk Song,” by John Barnes Chance. Chance based his work on a song, “Arirang,” he heard when he was in Korea in the 1950s, serving in the Army.

Julianna Sabo will be the soloist for “Fantasie” by Georges Hüe. Hüe composed the piece for the end-of-the-year examinations at the Paris Conservatory in 1913. It is one of the most famous compositions for flute in the repertoire.

Robert W. Smith is the composer of “To the Summit!,” which is a work commissioned by the Southeast District of Kappa Kappa Psi, a band fraternity, and Tau Beta Sigma, a band sorority.

Also on the program is “The Black Horse Troop,” one of dozens of marches composed by John Philip Sousa. Sousa, who was the Marine Band’s director from 1880 to 1892, is known as “The March King.”

Jack Stamp’s “Bandancing” is a work for wind band (an orchestra that has no string sections), as is 1960’s “The Sinfonians” by Clifton Williams. The final work of the evening is “October” by Eric Whitacre, also for wind band, which premiered in 2000.

The free concert is set for November 5. Programs for events like this can be created when organizers use brochure printing.
