A fun event in the Dayton suburb of Kettering will support the arts.
The upcoming Gem City Groundlings Holiday Gala & Fundraiser will feature live performances powering an evening of seasonal cheer. The night will include a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and drinks, and live performances featuring song, theater, dance, and holiday fun.
All proceeds of the event go to support the Gem City Groundlings, which believes theater is for everyone, especially Shakespeare’s works. Thee group works to bring classics of the theater to modern audiences with performances, artistic opportunities everyone can share, and education. It also takes part in prison reform using theater as a tool.
The word “groundlings” is attributed to Shakespeare and refers to the people who used to stand on the ground at performances in the area in front of the stage known as the “pit.” As the pit was not sheltered, they had to stand in the rain if weather was poor. The original Globe Theatre was built in 1599, rebuilt in 1614 after a fire, and closed in 1642. “Shakespeare’s Globe,” the modern structure, was built in 1997 and has an open roof, just like the original.
The gala, “A Winter’s Globe,” is scheduled for December 12, at the NCR Country Club, 4435 Dogwood Trail. Organizers note that the preferred dress code is black tie. Events like this benefit from elegant advertising that organizers may create using poster printing services.
