Every year, Cincinnati's City Beat runs a ‘Best of Cincinnati’ poll of their readers, asking them to name the best of everything the city has to offer, including the Best Cincinnatian. In 2017, the award went to Pete Rose. This year, the winner is Fiona.
Fiona, however, is a hippopotamus. She lives at the Cincinnati Zoo's Hippo Cove, and recently celebrated her first birthday – a milestone many feared she would never reach.
Fiona has captured the love and admiration of people all over the country, at least in part because the zoo made the decision to document the animal's life, starting with her premature birth. She went through a number of health crises, and the keepers were afraid they would lose her, but each time she pulled through. Today, she is just over a year old, weighs more than 600lb, and is healthy and happy.
The Hippo Cove exhibit was built on the site of a former parking lot. When the zoo was founded in 1875, there were no cars, but as they became common, the zoo moved animals to create parking lots. Now it is reversing the process, creating larger, healthier exhibits that more closely mimic the animals' natural habitats.
A printing company can create a handout for zoo visitors, so that they can read up on the animals they see.
