Turkeys run wild in Cincinnati

People in Cincinnati's Mount Washington neighborhood had a slightly surreal experience recently.

Last week, residents of the neighborhood came home from work to find almost two dozen turkeys in the streets. It appears that an individual who was raising the gobbling birds in the city decided to let 22 of them loose, much to the consternation of neighbors.

One individual, Jim Howes, said it was just one of those times when all a person can do is scratch their head. Howe would up with the flock in his yard, trotting down his driveway.

Neighbors called police, as well as the SPCA, but learned it is legal in Ohio for turkeys to roam freely, though a police officer did go to the scene. In the meantime, neighbors who were concerned for the turkeys’ safety tried to keep them away from coyotes and cars by rounding them up. Using stale cereal, these concerned citizens led them to Wendy McAdams backyard. McAdams said she and her neighbors could not just let harm come to the turkeys, and felt they had to help.

The turkeys stayed with McAdams all night and were picked up the next day by Jeremy Boswell, owner of Emmett Ridge Farm, who is also known as the “turkey wrangler”.

Since there was confusion over the incident, city officials might consider working with a postcard printer on a card for residents explaining the laws regarding livestock in Ohio.
