Primus started out in California in 1984 with Les Claypool, Todd Huth, and Jay Lane. Claypool, who handles the bass and vocals, is still with the band, now joined by Larry “Ler” LaLonde on guitar and Tim “Herb” Alexander on drums.
In 1989, with the Claypool/LaLonde/Alexander lineup, the band dropped “Suck on This,” a live recording. The followed that effort up with four studio albums, including “Sailing the Seas of Cheese,” which went platinum in 1991; and “Pork Soda,” which also went platinum, in 1993. “Tales from the Punchbowl” went gold in 1995, and the band has been nominated for several Grammys.
Critics and fans have been trying for years to find a word to describe Primus’s music. The group’s beginnings were in heavy metal, as both LaLonde and Claypool had been part of the thrash metal movement in California in the 1980s. However, their development since then defies description. Metallica’s guitarist Kirk Hammett called them:
“unique . . . a square peg in a round hole.”
Other terms applied to Primus include progressive rock, funk metal, funk rock, experimental rock, and more. A concert review says:
“Great show!!! Their performance was flawless and entertaining start to finish.”
Primus will be at the PNC Pavilion on September 18 at 7.00 pm. Poster printing is often used to publicize events like this.
