Kathleen Madigan is a native of Missouri and attended various high schools in the state. She was a student at the University of Missouri-St. Louis for two years, then switched to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where she was graduated in 1988 with a B.A. in journalism. While at the university, she managed the student newspaper, and was an intern with the St. Louis Blues, the city’s pro ice hockey team.
Her first professional jobs were in journalism at the Missouri Athletic Club, and with the Suburban Journals newspapers. However, even as she worked on news during the day, she did stand-up routines at comedy clubs in the St. Louis area during their open mic nights, with the support of her father. She began to have success in comedy, and was offered a paying gig with The Funny Bone, a national comedy club chain. She was guaranteed thirty weeks of bookings, and gave up her journalistic jobs to pursue comedy full time. She has released numerous CDs and DVDs, and has been featured in several television programs and specials.
