Despite their name hinting at Irish or British roots, Gaelic Storm first got together in Santa Monica, California, in 1996. They did, however, give their first performances in an Irish venue, O’Brien’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, which was managed by Patrick Murphy, one of the group’s founders. The other founding members were Steve Wehmeyer, Steve Twigger, Shep Lonsdale on drums, and Brian Walsh on uillean pipes. They were joined by fiddler Samantha Hunt, and their performance was so successful they began playing regularly.
Their rise began when they were cast as the steerage band in the “Titanic” movie. They performed four numbers, two of which were released as “An Irish Party in Third Class” on a soundtrack album, while the other two were called the “Titanic Set (Medley),” and appeared on “Herding Cats,” the group’s second album. After their appearance in the movie, Gaelic Storm began touring worldwide.
Since they first began their career, the band has dropped 13 albums. They are best known for their renditions of traditional Scottish and Irish music.
A review says:
“The band was very involved with the crowd, had a great stage presence along with great musicianship. The music was top notch . . .”
