New music venue opens in Cincinnati

The Ludlow Garage, a historic music venue, is back in business.

The Garage, which is in the historic Clifton area of the city, once featured acts by such entertainers as Santana, BB King, and the Allman Brothers.

Jim Tarbell opened the Ludlow Garage in 1969, in a refurbished automobile garage in Clifton. The club was successful for several years, but then Cincinnati's music scene changed, and small clubs like the Garage disappeared.

Scott Crawford has owned the Garage for approximately eight years, and operated Olives restaurant there for about seven of them. He says that from the time he bought the building, he has thought about bringing back the music that made the place famous, and he has now brought his plans to fruition.

In addition to music, Crawford is offering food. He closed the Olives restaurant in July and began remodeling the space, turning it into a music venue seating 262. Theater-style seats create an intimate atmosphere; the seat farthest from the stage is only 58 feet distant. Pop-up tables slide out to hold tapas and cocktails, which can be ordered in the theater. Upstairs is an 80-seat, full-service restaurant for those who want a complete meal.

Crawford opened the Garage on October 29 with a performance from Vanessa Carlton. Owners of venues like this could consider creating colorful Banners announcing each of the performers to add to the fun.
