The new Cincinnati streetcar has exceeded expectations, with weekend ridership levels anywhere from 300-500% more than originally projected. In order to meet the demand, Transdev, which operates the service, has agreed to increase the number of streetcars it runs on the weekends, Cincinnati.com has reported.
Transdev spokeswoman Ruth Otte said the company was glad to operate more streetcars, since its mission is to make the service a success, both for Transdev and for Cincinnati. Transdev works closely with the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA) and will continue to do so.
Resident Derek Bauman supports the streetcar, calling it a “huge hit” and noting that residents have been listened to. Cincinnati residents have requested quicker and more frequent service, so Bauman is glad to see officials from all the concerned agencies meeting to work out the issues.
The path to the agreement for improved service has been challenging. Officials have pointed out that Cincinnati's contract with the operator specifies that passengers should not have to wait longer than 15 minutes for a streetcar, no matter which stop they are using. SORTA's Jason Dunn said it would not be possible to fulfill this requirement unless Transdev increased the number of cars on the tracks, to which it agreed.
