Marc Cohn, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, is best known for his smash hit “Walking in Memphis.” The song is a track on his 1991 album “Marc Cohn,” which climbed to the number 38 spot on the Billboard 200 Chart. In 1992, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the album as Gold, and then in 1996 it rose to Platinum. In 1992, Cohn won a Grammy as “Best New Artist.”
Cohn lost both his mother and father by the time he was 12. Finding comfort in music, he was learning guitar and writing songs in junior high school. In college, he moved from Ohio to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he began playing at local coffee shops near the campus.
Buoyed by his success in California, he relocated to New York City, where he found steady work as the backing pianist for Tracy Chapman and cut a demo CD. Atlantic Records heard it and signed him.
A review says:
“I have been waiting to see Marc Cohn live since his first album in 1991. I was not disappointed. . . . I can honestly say that this . . . is probably one of the best concerts I have been to.”
He has now recorded five albums, four live albums, two compilation albums, and 19 singles. Cohn will appear at the Ludlow Garage on May 13. When concerts like this are on the schedule, organizers can promote them using poster printing.
