Cincinnati remodeling Central Y to include senior housing

A total of 65 apartments for low-income seniors are slated to be built as part of the renovation of the Central YMCA building in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood.

According to a May 29, 2015 news article, the building was closed last year for renovations. The project is being done by the Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. Plans include redoing the gym and adding new offices. When the renovations are complete, the YMCA's regional headquarters will continue to occupy some of the space.

The renovation for the housing units is being handled by the partnership of Episcopal Retirement Homes and the Model Group. The city has agreed to abate taxes on the property for eight years, which will save the two organizations an estimated $101,000 over the eight-year period. The abatement was the final step needed to move the project ahead, with construction slated to begin almost immediately.

The 65 apartments in the building are only the second project in Over-the-Rhine developed specifically for seniors. The first was Elm Street Senior Housing, which has only fifteen units, and is four blocks from the YMCA. The new units will offer amenities to the senior tenants such as exercise classes, access to parks, and a shuttle bus. Units should be ready for occupancy late in 2016.

The partnership might work with brochure printers to create a booklet about the units that could be placed in current senior housing areas.
