Cincinnati plans solar array

Cincinnati wants to go green, and has plans that would put it at the forefront of cities making these efforts.

City officials recently held a meeting at the Cincinnati Zoo's education center, where they told a crowd they want to build the biggest municipal solar array in the nation.

The array could cover as much as 150 acres of property owned by the city, and the site would include Lunken Airport, which serves mostly the general aviation community as well as local corporate fleets, though a few commercial flights operate from the field. Lunken Airport is about three miles southeast of the city's downtown. Power from the array would operate facilities like City Hall and the police department.

Larry Falkin, who is the director of the City of Cincinnati Office of Environment and Sustainability, said financing the project will ultimately be less expensive than simply continuing to pay the city's utility bills. He added that solar power will save money, reduce greenhouse gases, and make the air cleaner, and wondered why anyone wouldn't like these advantages.

Cincinnati is hoping it can begin construction early in 2019, and will have the city running on energy that is 100% renewable by 2035.

Project like this can have a substantial impact on many people, so officials might consider working with a newsletter printing company to keep residents informed and updated.
