Cincinnati introduces new police chief

Eliot Isaac, a 27-year Cincinnati police force veteran, was sworn in as its chief on near the end of December.

Isaac, who is the city's 15th police chief, was named to the post December 10, and succeeds Jeffrey Blackwell.

Cincinnati officials conducted a survey of residents, asking them what they wanted in a new chief of police. Respondents said they wanted someone who would emphasize community policing, and department morale. They also wanted someone who had come from within the city's police department, rather than an outsider. Isaac has been with the Cincinnati Police Department for 27 years.

John Cranley, Cincinnati's mayor, said Isaac, along with city leaders, is planning to hold a series of community meetings to interact with residents.

Isaac has been interim chief since September, and has earned praise for his work to improve department morale, and put more police on the streets. Isaac says he has taken the time to listen to complaints, and to communicate with officers as well as residents, and believes the department has begun to move in the right direction.

City officials asked for feedback from residents during the selection process, so they might consider reaching out again by working with a local postcard printing company to create a card that residents could return, sharing their concerns and suggestions for police going forward.
