Cincinnati bridge to be renovated

The Purple People Bridge that connects downtown Cincinnati with Newport, Kentucky, is looking a little run down, but its fans are planning to restore its vibrant color, and even add new features.

The bridge is owned by a nonprofit organization, the Newport Southbank Bridge Company (NSBC), which has set up a GoFundMe campaign in hopes of raising $100,000 to get work underway. NSBC plans to improve the landscaping, remove trash, and maintain and repaint the bridge. It also plans to install LED lights, which it says will enhance the safety of the bridge.

The popular bridge is a pedestrian-only structure that is privately owned, and often hosts events such as fireworks set off by WEBN on Labor Day, as well as being the spot for a ‘Party on the Purple’. Organizers of events like these pay small fees to NSBC for the use of the span. The bridge was built in 1872, and was renovated most recently in 2001.

Jack Moreland, NSBC's president, said it was vital the organization raise the money necessary for repairs if the bridge is to remain open. It was painted purple after studies showed that focus groups liked green and purple best. Purple won out, as it was considered a good color for such a large object.

Projects like this provide an opportunity for officials to use graphic design to develop subtle decorations.
