Spending allocation for American Rescue Plan funds

Akron is slated to receive $153 million from the American Rescue Plan and city officials have now decided how and when the funds will be distributed.

On March 11, Congress passed the American Rescue Plan with a total price tag of $1.9 trillion. Under this plan, more leeway is given in the use of funds than was allowable in earlier federally allocated CARES Act funding.

Among the areas the money can be spent on: emergency COVID-19 public health or negative economic impact response, water, sewer and broadband infrastructure investment, replacing revenue reduction to provide government services, and pandemic-associated municipal costs reimbursement.

Six primary priorities have been identified along with estimated allotments. Parks and public facilities will receive $30 million, budget stabilization and city information technology will have a total of $29 million, housing and public utility support - $25 million each, local economic recovery - $24 million and $20 million for youth violence prevention and to assist Akron communities.

Printing services are utilized by virtually every department in a city government to keep stakeholders up to date on progress with such projects.

An additional $5.3 million received from the American Rescue Plan has been suggested for low-income housing and homeless response.

Fund distribution is to take place in two rounds, the first in May and the second in May 2022. All funds received have until December 31, 2024 to be spent.

Payment allocation recommendations will be submitted to Council by July 5, with approval hoped for by July 19.
