What's Happening in Akron, OH…

Program offers live Christmas tree disposal

Summit Metro Parks is providing an extensive recycling opportunity for Akron residents and others living in Summit County.

Christmas tree recycling has been offered by the park system each year since the 1970s for the beautification of the county park system. The trees are made into mulch and spread in the areas near trailheads, as well as being used as landscaping compost. Often, pamphlets or brochures containing this sort of information can be found at public libraries.

County residents have a choice of six locations at which to drop off their trees. Small signs at each location indicate exactly where the public can leave their trees once they have been stripped of ornaments, lights, tinsel, and other decorations.

Outside Akron, Brushwood area residents can take their Christmas trees to Furnace Run Metro Park in Richfield. In Green, Nimisila Reservoir Metro Park will be accepting trees and Silver Creek Metro Park in Norton will also have a drop-off spot.

Akron tree deposit spots include the metro parks Firestone, Sand Run, and Goodyear Heights. In addition to the drop-off locations, Akron residents can set their trees out at the curb on their regular trash days.

Each year, decoration-free trees can be left at the designated metro park locations from December 26 to January 31. Around 1,000 trees are left at the drop-off spots each year.
