What's Happening in Akron, OH…

Mayors Citizens Institute returns to in-person format

The City of Akron Press Office issued a release recently announcing that the city’s local government education classes will resume this August, and unlike last year, the classes will once again be held in person.

Mayor Dan Horrigan established the classes in 2017 to provide the municipality’s residents with a means to learn more about how their city government worked. The Mayor’s Citizen Institute is a no-cost, 10-week program designed to familiarize Akron citizens with the inner workings of their city government. The next class will start in late August and run into November.

When a diverse, yet limited, number of participants is being sought, a poster printing service is an excellent promotional option.

The 2020 classes were limited as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic; however, infection rates as well as hospitalizations are down, so classes can return to full capacity and be held in person. A diverse group of approximately 25 residents will come together once a week to interact with City leaders and departments to learn how about city government and what they can do to contribute to Akron’s growth and success.

Participants will learn about city services and programs available to Akron resident and businesses. The intent is to both educate as well as “foster pride, progress and partnerships” to a diverse cross-section of the community.

Applications are being accepted now and the deadline is July 19. Applicants must currently reside in Akron and be 18 or over.
