Historical Akron venue revamped with theater
The iconic Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company building in Akron has been renovated, and the Goodyear Theater is open.
In 1919, Goodyear built a recreational complex and school for its employees that also included a theater and a gym.
Appearing at the end of April, the first act to perform was a touring company of Kidz Bop, followed by Grammy-winners Smashing Pumpkins a few days later, and country sensation Gavin DeGraw the day after that. The three acts made for an exciting opening week. Upcoming concerts feature Josh Turner, Jason Isbell, Dawes, and Australian Pink Floyd.
Planners hope to bring a minimum of 150 concerts to the Goodyear Theater and Goodyear Hall annually. The two theaters are located in the East Market Street complex, a redevelopment project that is part of Goodyear’s new world headquarters. The theater underwent a complete renovation and now seats 1,458, while the old gymnasium is now Goodyear Hall, with a seating capacity of 3,500.
Country star Josh Turner will appear May 12, and critically-praised singer-songwriter Jason Isbell is due to perform June 4. Dawes, a folk-rock quartet from Los Angeles, take the stage July 20. Australian Pink Floyd, a tribute to the prog-rock legends, will visit the Goodyear on August 4.
Theater managers could work with a poster printing company to create colorful posters to advertise each of the acts.
