Fourth building proposed in new development
On May 23, members of the Akron City Council heard from a spokesman for S.J. Collins, the company developing the West Akron project. According to a
May 26, 2016 news article, Collins wants to add a fourth building to the site. The proposed structure would comprise 4,200 square feet, allowing room for as many as three businesses, with a Whole Foods 365 market as the anchor.
Mike Antenucci, the zoning manager for Akron, said the city had approved the original plan for the site last July. At that time, plans called for housing Whole Foods in a building to be constructed at the former West Point Market, on North Hawkins Avenue. Two others buildings were also proposed.
Recently, Whole Foods said their new store in Akron will be one of the organic-focused chain's first 365 stores. These markets offer produce sold per item, and prepared food sold by the container. The traditional stores offer these items by the pound, meaning the new concept is often more economical. It also means the store reduced its proposed footprint by approximately 10,000 square feet. The reduction gives Whole Food more space on the site, and leaves about 4,000 square feet for an additional retailer.
Many businesses in the retail sector work with printing companies to develop attractive materials, such as festive banners, that will invite customers to explore the new development when it opens.
