Community building opens in East Akron

The East Akron Community House building, which was renovated by the East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation (EANDC), opened to the public on February 23.

The developer put about $200,000 into the renovation, and also paired up with a number of agencies to bring services to the residents of the area.

Those groups include Project Learn, the Akron Summit County Community Action group, and the Good Samaritan Hunger Center. In addition, wellness programs will soon be available at the house, provided by the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center. At the open house, visitors were able to tour the mobile health unit the clinic brought to the event.

Grady Appleton, President and CEO of EANDC, characterized the building as being essential to the stability of the neighborhood. The building's future had been uncertain until last year, when EANDC bought it. The agency's specialty is redeveloping the neighborhood, and to that goal, it has taken space in the building, where it plans to offer emergency help with home repairs, assistance to home buyers, and other services. Appleton said he hopes EANDC will be able to provide even more services, particularly to young people.

EANDC might consider working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents in the area, inviting them to come to the building and learn what services are available to them.
