Coach House Theatre kicks off 90th season
The Coach House Theatre in Akron turns 90 this year, and will begin its season with a world premiere, ‘Christmas in Akron: The Musical’, by Rob Loos, a native of Akron. The musical opens with a gala and runs for four weekends.
Loos drew on his home town, and particularly O'Neil's department store, for his inspiration. He has set the play in the 1970s, during a holiday season in downtown Akron. The main character is Diane Diamond, who works at O'Toole's Department Store as its head copywriter. She has been tasked with directing the annual Christmas show at the store, all the time keeping a secret.
In order to get the show up and running, she teams up with Roger Hamlin, the store's art director, and Benjamin ‘Bevo’ Beaverman, a shoe salesman who also plays the piano, and who loves Diane. The villain is O'Toole's nasty VP, who wants to scrap the whole thing.
The unlikely trio only has 48 hours to get the show up and running, while trying to stay out of the VP's way. They pull together some of the wackiest acts in the Akron region..
The show opens today, December 1, and runs the next four weekends, with its final performance a matinee on Christmas Eve.
Events like this can be even more fun if managers work with a poster printing company to create festive posters for the production.
