City seeks residents' help in shaping housing policy

Akron City Council, after having concerns regarding the city’s housing situation brought to its attention recently, has decided to organize six groups of volunteers to look into those matters and form policy recommendations.

The Safe Housing Steering Committee of Akron City Council held an hour-long presentation recently at the Akron-Summit County Public Library’s downtown branch, where the idea for six groups each dealing with a housing factor was laid out to those in attendance. Following a short question-and-answer period, approximately three dozen attendees volunteered to be part of seeking solutions to improve the city’s housing situation.

Two councilmembers will be assigned to each of the following six groups of volunteers: property conditions and maintenance, landlord and tenants’ rights, law and ordinances, health and social service, long-range planning, and public safety.

Local government use brochure printing services to provide information regarding volunteer opportunities and available public services.

It is entirely possible that the volunteers may find themselves making policy recommendations for larger housing issues. Council anticipates seeing some results from focus group suggestions on the more obvious issues in just a few months. All six focus groups will in the coming weeks and months report back to the Safe Housing Steering Committee with their findings and recommendations. So far, there have been no announcement of scheduled meetings on the matter.

The focus groups are still accepting volunteers, and those interested can sign up here.
