Baseball team on lookout for local singers
The Akron RubberDucks, the city's Double-A minor league baseball team, recently held auditions to find people to sing the national anthem at home games. The Ducks are affiliated with the Cleveland Indians.
The auditions were held March 18 at Canal Park, where the RubberDucks play. In total, 55 hopefuls braved the cold to stand in front of a snowy field and sing the anthem for a panel of judges. Among those on the panel were Leanne Stofsick and Christine Stewart, both of whom teach music at the Cuyahoga Falls City School District. Joining them on the panel were Jay White from Kent State University where he teaches voice; and Brian Bailey, who is director of choirs for Cleveland State University.
According to Bailey, the panel members were looking for good pitch, energy, tone, and someone who knows the melody as well as the words. In total, 10 people will be picked to sing the anthem at 10 upcoming games. Among those auditioning was Felicia Landry, an Akron resident, who sang the national anthem for the RubberDucks years ago, when the team was known as the Akron Aeros.
The RubberDucks home opener is next Thursday, April 6, at 6:35 pm, when they face off against the Bowie, Maryland, Baysox, who are affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles.
Organizations like this can benefit by working with a banner printing company, which can create sturdy and festive items to hang throughout the park to celebrate the opening.
