Akron school opens new facility

Summit Academy Akron, an elementary school in the city, recently dedicated a new playground with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Summit Academy Management operates a number of schools throughout Ohio where children who struggle with various conditions that make learning difficult can find support and a nurturing environment in which to learn.

At the dedication, Summit Academy Management's CEO, Barbara Danforth, said the event was exciting for everyone concerned, since LearningLand, the new play space, is much more than a simple playground. The space incorporates features that help promote the students' social interactions. Just as vital, however, are spots where children can go to find peace and quiet if they have difficulty in noisy or rowdy surroundings.

School officials say these spaces include an egg-shaped seat that rocks, which is set well away from the main playground. There is also a tunnel which has been built into the main structure where students can find refuge. Other pieces of equipment include slides, rock walls, and panels depicting mazes, maps, clocks, letters, and mirrors.

LearningLand cost $49,000, which was raised by friends, parents, and school staff members. Financial support came from the Albrecht Family Foundation, the Akron Community Foundation, and Rick Chernick, and union carpenters installed the equipment, while Ace Hardware donated equipment and time.

Facilities like this can benefit if officials work with brochure printers to create handouts describing the amenities offered by the school.
