Akron runners race for the cure
Over 1,000 people took to Akron's streets on Sunday, July 27, to raise money for the fight against breast cancer.
This was the third annual ‘Akron Race for the Cure’, starting at Firestone Stadium and ending at Firestone Country Club, a distance of 3.1 miles. After the race, there was a survivors' ceremony at the 18th green of the country club.
Participants raised thousands of dollars that will go to supporting education about breast health, support, and screening services provided throughout Northeast Ohio, as well as nationwide research efforts.
The finish line was marked by paddles used by Dragon Dream Team of Ohio. The group is a dragon boat team comprised of breast cancer supporters. The winner of the men’s competition was William Morgan, an eighteen-year-old from Rootstown, whose time for the event was 18:35. Taylor Koenig, 22, of Akron won the women's division in 21:58.5.
Motorcyclists were invited to cheer on the walkers and runners by forming a ‘Tunnel of Thunder’. Bikers met at 8:00 am in front of the Cliffside Key Club, where they revved their motors as race participants passed them.
Race organizers will no doubt want to keep people interested in the event, so they could work with brochure printers to create a mailer explaining the race, outlining next year's event, and highlighting the work made possible by it.
