Akron kicks off Harvest for Hunger

Nearly 500 people recently attended the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbanks kickoff breakfast that started the 27th Harvest for Hunger Campaign.

This is the largest number of people to attend since 2016, when the events started. The campaign is a partnership among four of the area’s foodbanks: the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, the Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio, the Second Harvest Food Bank of Mahoning Valley, and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. The consortium is focused on fighting hunger in 21 Northeast Ohio counties.

The goal of the Harvest campaign this year is to raise 100,000 pounds of food, and $1.31m. This amount will provide over 5.2 million meals to hungry Ohio residents. This year, the campaign is led by Jim Porter, CEO and publisher of Gatehouse Media Ohio, and Cleveland Clinic Akron General’s president, Dr. Brian Harte.

Dan Flowers, who is the CEO of the Foodbank, said that in 2017, the organization broke records by distributing 32.9 million pounds of food. This amount has put it on track to meet its goal of eliminating hunger by 2025.

Residents are invited to take part in the effort, either by coordinating a drive themselves, or making a donation. People can drop off food donations are Heinen’s Fine Foods, Ace Hardware, Giant Eagle, Fishers Foods, Dave’s Supermarkets, or Buehler’s Fresh Foods.

Organizers can call attention to efforts like this by working with a poster printing company to create posters to advertise the campaign.
