Akron Childrens Hospital turns 125
A hospital for children in Akron has recently celebrated a major anniversary, and in honor of the day it has decided to give flowers to the community.
However, the plants are decidedly not those found in most gardens, as they are reportedly metal sculptures, which have been designed to survive the changing seasons of Ohio.
The flowers range in height from seven to ten feet, and include Virginia bluebells, sunflowers, violets, lilies, and asters. There are 15 varieties of plants native to Ohio included in the collection, which was designed by Judith Spater and created in metal by Stephen Canneto.
Spater and Canneto are both Columbus residents, and made 25 flowers in total for Akron Children’s Hospital. The facility’s director of corporate communications, Andrea Joliet, said the hospital has been planning for its 125th anniversary for several years, and decided the best way to celebrate was with a community art project. The colorful flowers are associated with a new critical care tower set to open May 5th.
Sculptures have been appearing throughout Akron in the last few weeks, with 25 locations signing up to display one for a year. Among the sites showing the flowers are Akron Zoo and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, which will display a flower at its Northside Station.
The hospital might work with a postcard printing company to develop a card about the flowers for mailing to Akron residents.
