Akron announces plans for new fire stations
Akron officials recently announced they plan to break ground soon on a new fire station, the first to be built in the city in 22 years.
The new facility will replace Fire Station No. 2, with construction slated to begin this summer. The station should be finished by Summer 2019.
Akron officials said they are making plans to maintain the station's operations while construction is ongoing. They will use stations nearby or set up a temporary site in the neighborhood.
The design of the building is in the hands of Hasenstab Architects, while KZF Design will provide consulting services specific to fire stations, and expertise to make certain the new station meets the latest industry standards. Some of the most important and iconic elements of the present station will be included in the new structure, including the fountain known as ‘Boy and Girl Under Umbrella’, which the city received as a donation in the 1880s.
The new station will offer three full equipment bays, a small office space earmarked as a satellite office of the Akron Police Department, living quarters for the station's personnel, a training room that will double as a treatment room for people who come to the station for medical assistance, a tower for air-drying fire hoses, and facilities for decontaminating equipment.
Issues like this are important to everyone, so officials could work with a brochure printing company to create a pamphlet for mailing to residents, describing the project.
