Valley Stream to host community garden

A plot of land that is mostly empty between Horton Avenue and Newbold Avenue in Valley Stream is slated to become the first community garden in the village.

The garden will have a fence around it and will be a growing area for vegetables that will be organically sourced for use by and for the members of the garden. A volunteer for the project, Irene Crovets-Prager, said there will be a limited number of slots. Those selected for the garden will be picked through a lottery system. Those who will be eligible for the community garden need to be of an adult age and residents of the village. There will be plots allocated for those with disabilities in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Each gardener will have a raised plot of soil, enriched with minerals for growing. Water will be available, and it will be secured and locked. Gardeners will need to provide their own plants. More details about such plots, eligibility, and their pricing can be provided with flyer printing.

Crovets-Prager said that ground has been broken on the garden. She added that members will be welcomed in phases as the garden is being built. The first phase will have 28 open plots. She said that when completed there will be over 40 plots.

The lottery for the first phase will be open next month.
