The Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) of New York State has awarded the village of Valley Stream $10 million.
News of such funding and its benefits for a community is often made known with flyer printing.
The funds will be used by the village to support a theater and arts space, make improvements for pedestrians, support local businesses, and develop transit-oriented opportunities. A local planning committee of residents and business leaders with input from state officials will determine which projects will be funded.
The planning assistance and funding provided by the DRI has significantly enhanced and accelerated efforts to revitalize downtown areas in the communities where it has been awarded. This state support is especially vital for smaller villages and municipalities, where budgets are already stretched thin and every dollar is committed to maintaining essential services.
Kevin Waszak, trustee of the village of Valley Stream, thanked Governor Kathy Hochul for these funds which will be an investment in the downtown and in the future of the village. He added that it will enable the village to create a more connected, vibrant, and welcoming community for businesses, commuters, residents, and those in the future.
The DRI will be investing $10 million in 10 communities across New York State. This will make a total of $1.4 billion of funding that has been allocated by all rounds of the DRI, which are announced on a rolling, region-by-region basis after applications are reviewed.
