Valley Stream opens new community garden

A new community garden has been launched in Valley Stream.

It is along E. Hawthorne Avenue and its goal is to encourage residents to learn about sustainability practices, grow their own food, and create a thriving green space for members of the garden and volunteers to enjoy.

Part of the garden will be operated by ReWild Long Island, a non-profit organization based on Long Island that focuses on improving and protecting the resilience, biodiversity, and health of ecosystems in the area. Their space in the garden will use eco-friendly methods such as harvesting rainwater, composting, and sustainable landscaping practices that use native plants.

There will be regular educational workshops that will teach sustainable practices and gardening skills. Members will have their own planter and will be able to grow produce that can be donated as well to the Island Harvest Food Bank. Volunteers will help with the general upkeep of the garden and will help members to care for their gardens. Volunteer opportunities as well as membership in the grade are open to people of all ages and skill levels.

Brochure printing can be used to provide more detailed information about such gardens as well as membership and volunteer opportunities.

Among those supporting this new garden are the village of Valley Stream; Green Acres, the largest benefactor; Long Island Jewish Valley Stream, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County; and Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages.
