Special distinctions and awards given to students from Valley Stream

Students in the school districts of Valley Stream have been recognized with several honors.

Flyer printing is a popular way to spread news of such awards and distinctions throughout a school community and neighboring areas.

The 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program has named five of the seniors in the Valley Stream Central High School District as Commended Students.

There are about 34,000 students across the country who have earned the distinction of Commended Student. This places them in the top 50,000 scorers out of more than 1.3 million entrants. Those who score at or above a Selection Index of 210 on the PSAT are recognized with this honor, which is representative of the highest 3% of those taking the test. These students have been congratulated by the school district for their outstanding academic achievement.

In addition, first place in the Celebration of Suburban Diversity Student Essay Contest for 2025 from Hofstra University was awarded to Jia Ru Yang, a student from Valley Stream South High School. Her essay explored the biases and insensitivities bilingual students face in their daily lives. The judges were impressed with her interpretation of the issues surrounding diversity on Long Island and her keen observations. Her prize for first place earned her a $3,000, scholarship which will go towards her graduation and acceptance into an accredited institution of higher learning.
