Valley Stream to build path network to train station

Funding of $1.7m from the New State Legislature will enable Valley Stream to create a series of connected walkways for pedestrians and cyclists that will provide direct access to the Long Island Railroad station in the village.

The plan is to create about 3,000 feet of off-road paths in Edward W. Cahill Memorial Park that will connect people to the thoroughfares and streets in the surrounding area. Local Print shops can assist in printing maps of such paths so that residents will be able to find the best route for their needs.

David Sabatino, the coordinator of the project for the village, said that the pathways will end in an intersection in the shape which will provide greater visibility for the people crossing the highway to the train station. He said the state transportation department will also be installing traffic signals which will improve the safety of the intersection.

Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages said that building a multi-use path to connect existing routes to the Long Island Railroad will provide many benefits for the community. Solages added that this will enable residents to use nonmotorized Forms of transportation in a safer manner and will improve the health of people in the community. Additional benefits will include keeping traffic away from some of the more accident-prone and congested streets.
