Valley Stream may be eligible for bond funding

The Environmental Bond Act of New York State is set to potentially provide close to $3bn in bond funding for various infrastructure and environmental projects.

These funds would be for projects involving climate change mitigation, water quality improvement, conservation of open land space, and reduction of flood risk.

State Senator Todd Kaminsky said that this funding is an opportunity to replace or improve aging infrastructure in Valley Stream and Elmont and create 65,000 jobs in the process. He added that as Valley Stream has been a community for over 100 years, much of its infrastructure was built when it was founded. Projects such as replacement of sewer systems could be outlined and described for the community using flyer printing services.

Michelle Solages, a State Assemblywoman, said that the funds could also be directed to shoreline restoration projects as such protection is needed for storms the area has experienced, including Tropical Storm Irene and Hurricane Sandy. She said that some areas of southwestern Valley Stream are prone to flooding and that projects in other towns that have restored wetlands and improved stormwater drainage have restored areas that suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Sandy.

The act also mandates that 35% of the funding should go towards projects in neighborhoods that meet certain socioeconomic and racial demographic criteria, which describes portions of Western Valley Stream.
