Valley Stream appoints new female village justice

Edwin Fare, mayor of Valley Stream, has appointed Associate Village Justice Melanie Jenkins to fill the remainder of the term left by Virginia Clavin-Higgins, Village Justice, who is retiring.

Such appointments often lead to new business card printing orders as staff look to accessorize for their new roles.

Clavin-Higgins was the first female village justice in Valley Stream when she came into the position in 2016. Jenkins is following in her footsteps as the second woman to be the Village Justice in Valley Stream. She has practiced law for over 30 years, having spent several years in the office of the New York State Attorney General handling employment and labor law cases and then securities law prosecutions, and as Principal Law Clerk for William J. O’Brien, Judge of the Nassau County Court.

Jenkins has also worked at Citigroup in the private sector as regulatory counsel, handling regulatory examinations for brokers and dealers, and as in-house legal counsel for Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan where she supervised a team of paralegals and lawyers who investigated client complaints prior to litigation.

Jenkins attended Dickenson College where she received her undergraduate degree in international studies and political science, and also at the University of Buffalo School of Law from which she received her Juris Doctorate.

Jenkins will serve in the position until April 3, 2023, after which she would need to run in the March election of the town if she wanted to remain in it.
