Rochester chosen for new high-tech manufacturing site
Rochester has been selected by the Department of Defence to be the home of a new manufacturing hub.
The city will become the future site of a new integrated photonics manufacturing facility. Three other cities were also being considered.
The new facility will bring together experts in the field from industry, academia, and the military to research, develop, and manufacture innovations using light in telecommunications, lasers, and other technologies. It is hoped that these will be put to use in improving internet communications networks, battlefield and radar imaging, and medical science. It will also develop and train a skilled workforce to work at the site.
With over 100 different firms involved in the field of photonics and optics, Rochester is already a major player in this area, and it is expected that this new manufacturing center will further increase its standing. It’s also hoped that it will provides thousands of jobs for the city and surrounding area, along with spin-off benefits for local firms that provide materials and support, such as those that offer printing services.
A consortium of education institutions was involved in the state’s bid. This included State University of New York Polytechnic Institute, the Rochester Institute of Technology, the University of Rochester, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and the University of Arizona.
