Richard Renaldi Manhattan Monday exhibit opens at Eastman Museum

Visitors to the Eastman Museum in Rochester have been given the first chance to see the newest series of photographs from Richard Renaldi, displaying at a museum for the first time.

Renaldi’s work consists of still life in urban settings, streetscapes, and portraits. His black and white photography is described as ‘meticulous’, and focuses on the mood of New York City in the hours before dawn.

The Eastman Gallery is located on the estate of motion picture and photography pioneer George Eastman. The museum was founded in 1947, and holds a collection of several million objects in film, cinema, and associated technology. The gallery includes several ongoing exhibits, and many different temporary exhibit, and guided tours of the historical building itself. Many art galleries use graphic design to create Brochures, letting members know about upcoming events.

Previous shows by Renaldi have been ‘Touching Strangers’, which focused on portraits of asking strangers to touch, and ‘Figure and Ground’, which was a series of portraits captured on the background of the Old West. The description of Renaldi’s show indicates that his experience as a gay nightclub goer is implicit in his most recent work, and that the photographs show the way an urban context can encourage social awareness, as well as a sense of community.
