Escher exhibit continues in Rochester

The exhibition ‘M. C. Escher: Reality and Illusion’ is showing at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester until the end of the next month.

M. C. Escher was a Dutch artist who lived from 1898 to 1971. His most popular works of art were seemingly impossible puzzles inspired by mathematics. The exhibit features some of the artist's early figure drawings.

There are also 120 woodcuts, several lithographs, mezzotints, and drawings. The majority of the featured art has been borrowed from a private collection, suggesting it has been seen very rarely.

As with all of the exhibits at the gallery, there are several upcoming creative workshops classes that are related to Escher. On January 14, the Family Sketch Hunters Club will be learning about Escher in and event for people aged five and over. The ‘OK, it’s Fabulous Art Project Time’ for children between the ages of seven to ten will be held on January 21. In addition, there is a three-week Appreciating Printmaking course that begins on January 11.

No doubt those in Rochester who are interested in graphic design will want to catch this show before it leaves.

M. C. Escher: Reality and Illusion will be on display at the Memorial Art Gallery until January 29. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 am. Admission is $14 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for children between the ages of 6 and 18 and college students. Call 585-276-8900 for more information.
