New Rochelle’s Big Read for 2015 will bring ‘The Adventure of Tom Sawyer’ to life in a series of performances by nine middle and high school students.
The Big Read Theater Troupe kicked things of yesterday evening at 7:30 pm at the cemetery of the Trinity-St. Paul’s Church. They performed a site reading where Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn go to a cemetery looking for a cure for warts.
The next event will be on June 6 from 9:00 am to 11:30 am, courtesy of the troupe at the Fishing Derby Classic awards ceremony held every year by the Department of Parks and Recreation at the Twin Lakes at Huguenot Park. Those who dress as characters from the book will get special prizes. Children in kindergarten through grade eight are invited to participate, and need to bring their own reel, rod, and hook.
A replica of the fence Tom Sawyer painted with his friends will be installed at the BID Farmers’ Market on Library Green from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on June 13 so that a community fence-painting party can be held. Following a live musical performance by the Banjo Rascals, the troupe will perform various scenes from the book.
