An exhibit commemorating the 250th anniversary of Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” has been curated by students from Iona University in New Rochelle.
These students had the opportunity to travel recently to Lewes, England and spent three weeks working with the director of Bull House, Leanne O’Boyle, and Adam Arenson, Ph.D. and professor at the university to create the exhibit. The exhibit highlights the legacy of the ideas of Paine on democracy.
The University of Sussex in Falmer, England offered housing for the students as well as various excursions and social events for them during their stay. Students from Iona were able to interact with students from around the world, tour the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, and travel to Arundel Castle.
Arenson said that the program was an excellent opportunity for students to immerse themselves in historic houses, museums, and archives of rare Books. He said that they were thrilled to see how the students could learn how the legacy of Thomas Paine is understood in England and to contribute to the growth of the museum at Bull House.
News of such unique opportunities and their outcomes and benefits for students can be made known throughout a college campus with flyer printing.
The exhibit will open this month at Bull House which is the site of the historic home and business of Thomas Paine.
