A new green space is being planned for Iona College in New Rochelle.
The space will be in the center of the campus and will create an outdoor area where students can enjoy academic, recreational, social, and artistic activities. A gift from Joseph Murphy, class of 1959, and his late wife, JoAnn M. Murphy a longtime Iona trustee and honorary graduate of 1998, is making this space possible.
The green space will cover 30,000 square feet and replace a parking circle outside of the LaPenta Student Union. To be known as the Murphy Green, the space will have a terrace area, stone walkways, trees, and benches as well as a luscious green lawn. There will also be seating built into East Hall to create a place for outdoor classes, poetry readings, and performances. Such projects often look to poster printing services for the design of displays to inform the community of their progress.
Seamus Carey, Ph.D., president of Iona College, said that it is important to have outdoor spaces to provide the energy for the interaction of faculty and students so they can build meaningful relationships and stay engaged in their learning. He expressed his gratitude to the Murphy family for their support of the college.
Plans are to break ground this summer with an expected completion date of spring 2022.
